OneAsiaHost: 512MB OVZ in Singapore – Review

Maybe I should replace SSHD with Dropbear, hmm

Hey there folks,

As usual, been a while since the last post. My theoritical exams finished today, actually. I have some unexpected free time tonight and stumbled over an opportunity to test a VPS in neighboring SG for free.

Well, I’ve never been one to turn down free (and appealing too!) offers like these, so here goes nothing.

Initial Impressions:

Truthfully, I’ve never heard of OneAsiaHost prior to today. However, since there is a dire shortage of Asia based OpenVZ (Or rather, VPS) providers, they’ve targeted a very nice (and niche) market.

Due to being from Asia too, I took one of these up as an attempt to test the network to my various other boxes around the world and host some private gameservers to see how they fare.

If I can make do with 60GB bandwidth, I’m likely to keep one of these, actually. It’s not everyday you see something in any Asian country with bandwidth pricing this cheap.

Pretty permalinks and playing with xenForo

My xenForo testbed

My xenForo testbed

Finally got around to enabling pretty permalinks in WordPress. I had it disabled because the default .htaccess file obviously, doesn’t work with anything but Apache. While I’ve known how to make it work for nginx for a decent while, I suppose I was simply too lazy.

For anyone else wanting to do the same but being too lazy, I’ll make your life easier a bit. Add the line below to your vhost config file (Or the nginx.conf under a location /dir_here { } block if you run it under a direct location)

try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?q=$uri&$args;

That’s all it takes, but if you’re in :lazy: mode, I suppose that is still a lot of work :P

Moving on, a very good friend (who also happens to be a coworker) gave me a xenForo license to try out. While I do not have any intentions of starting out a community anytime soon, I’m more than glad to actually try it out. I’ve been curious for a while about it but never really got to trying it out. vBulletin and IPB were about all the commercial forum scripts I tried on for myself before.

The screenshot at the beginning of the article shows my local xenForo install dubbed ‘Testforo’.

Initial impressions are quite a bit better than IPB and vBulletin altogether. Though, the sad thing is, xenForo doesn’t seem to support anything but MySQL out of the box either. vBulletin is at-least developing support for Postgre (Or so I’ve heard), but I don’t see any such operations ongoing here.

The forum interface (As well as the admin panel) are inituative and seem very fluid. Though, this is an empty install, I can’t really predict how it handles itself under load.

I’ll keep poking around and post if I see anything that’s worth posting about :3

Happy Lunar New year! (4710 – 农历新年)

Hey there folks,

Long time no blogging again, but that seems to be a trait of mine I can’t really do much about. Happy Lunar New Year 4710 to you guys, by the way.

Today (January 23rd) marks the beginning of the year of the Dragon. 4709 was the year of the placid rabbit, but here comes the year of the bold, ferocious and brash ancient lord.

According to the Chinese calendar, 2012 is the year of 龍, or so to say, The Dragon.

I’m a bit baffled by how first time flies, heh. I still remember doing last year’s lunar new year post not too long ago, according to my mind anyway.

Anyway, happy new years and happy holidays folks! \o/

Moege awards 2011 announced!

‘Sup guys,

I seldom do translation posts but I might as well for this particular one. For I believe that this news holds considerable significance to incite rage upon many reading it, heuheu.

The 2011 moe-game awards have been announced and here’s a brief recap of the happenings. I personally had not even been aware of this award existing, but thanks to Japanese blogger Yaraon, I found out. In any case, as its name suggests, it’s an award for ‘moe’-games and if I might say, it manages to do that part just fine.

This year’s grand prize went to Front Wing’s (フロントウイング) Grisaia no Kajitsu (グリザイアの果実 -LE FRUIT DE LA GRISAIA-). However, there are two silver winners. They’re respectively Eushully’s Kamidori Alchemy Master (神採りアルケミーマイスター) and Clochette’s Kamikaze ☆ Explorer! (カミカゼ☆エクスプローラー!). Let’s take a peek, shall we?

01. Grisaia no Kajitsu (グリザイアの果実 -LE FRUIT DE LA GRISAIA-):

Reference link: here | Vndb link: here | Getchu link: here

That academy – used to be the orchard of young girls.
A lonely boy, who lost his purpose to live, came to that isolated-from-the-foreign-enemies academy.
Lose sight of things that should be protected, he spends his life in living day by day with regret and atonement. His life is cheaper than a stray dog when that heavy cangue still around his neck.
And then at that academy, the boy finds out his new hope in encountering with these girls.

── That girl, who being born was already a mistake.
Who defied the sin──
──Who died thought she’s living.
Who doesn’t have anyone to protect──
──and who being punished for surviving.

That place is the girls’ orchard.
The trees of regret bear the fruit of repentance of those girls. What on earth can I do for these girls…?
That is the eternal hope which the lonely boy dreamt…

Moege awards reasoning:

I personally never had the chance to play this one but after this has happened, I just might. While I do prefer story based titles over typical moege stuff, this actually seems like it has a story.

02. Kamidori Alchemy Master (神採りアルケミーマイスター)

Reference link: here | Vndb link: here | Getchu link: here

In the Setetori region of the southern part of the Raulbhach continent lies the Mikelti Kingdom. Among the seven major cities is the artisan city of Yuidora. This is where a young orphan named Wilfred lives, pursuing his dream of becoming an alchemist. As tensions between neighboring nations rise and a threat of war looms, three girls in distress come to his place and he helps protect them. Using a new technique that he discovered and with the help of other races, will they be able to restore peace to the lands?

Moege awards reasoning:

This is a game I actually wanted to help Ignis from the AS (Anime Sharing) team to translate. We then got busy with real life stuff and it never really went anywhere. Despite that, I’m happy to see that it managed to grab an spot here.

03. Kamikaze ☆ Explorer! (カミカゼ☆エクスプローラー!)

Reference link: here | Vndb link: here | Getchu link: here

In the near future, the living areas for humans reduce due to climate and terrain changes. As if in unison, some of the younger generation develop special powers called Metis. There are many types of Metis, from magic barriers to being able to breathe under water. Suminoe Gakuen was constructed to train and develop those students with Metis. Keiji doesn’t have any powers, but he was scouted by an agent from the school and ends up attending the school. He is then recruited into Argonaut, a club for helping people with their problems. One day, they hear about a strange rumour about the recently developed Kamigase-shi…

Moege awards reasoning:

This is a game that personally never really stood out to me, I’m a bit surprised to see here to be completely honest. Nonetheless, I’ll try giving it a go sometime in the near future if I can. The plot actually does sound a bit intriguing…

Aside from the three grand winners, there are a individual awards too for excellence in a category. Amusing thing is, some of the grand prize winners are included here too. I’ll conjure a list of them here:

 • Best Scenario: Grisaia no Kajitsu (グリザイアの果実 -LE FRUIT DE LA GRISAIA-)
 • Best BGM: Kamidori Alchemy Master (神採りアルケミーマイスター)
 • Best user support: Grisaia no Kajitsu (グリザイアの果実 -LE FRUIT DE LA GRISAIA-)
 • Best graphics: Kamikaze ☆ Explorer! (カミカゼ☆エクスプローラー!)
 • Best user interface: Akatoki! -Yume Koso Masare Koi no Mahou- (あかときっ! -夢こそまされ恋の魔砲-)
 • Best character design: Kamikaze ☆ Explorer! (カミカゼ☆エクスプローラー!)
 • Best ‘pocket-friendliness’ (price): Kagura Soushunfu (神楽早春賦)
 • Best 3D animation: BALDRSKY DiveX “DREAM WORLD”
 • Best musical performance: Grisaia no Kajitsu (グリザイアの果実 -LE FRUIT DE LA GRISAIA-)

…and so on. For the full list, please visit

Apologies for not including vndb and getchu links for the last list, but it’s time consuming enough as it is. Surprising thing is, I’ve played through a lot of them despite being rather busy lately.

Launched a new project

Cute, no?

‘ello guys,

long time no post as usual, heh. In any case, I started a music sharing project (Mostly music anyway) that can be located over at

If you’ve got the time, please do drop by. If anybody would want to share their stuff there as well, leaving a comment here would do the job. It’s updated quite frequently with new music as they get released, so checking back often might be a good idea.

A few translated light novels

Disclaimer: This post is directly copied over from the BakaBT forums; the original poster is Kureshii.

What this is: Digital versions of select light novel translations, from Baka-Tsuki or elsewhere, typeset in ebook format for reading.

Why?: Because I like my light novel translations nicely typeset for reading.

But EPUB/PDF is fail!: Don’t download this then. Hop on over to Baka-Tsuki or other sites for your light novel fix.

Note on EPUBs: I typeset the EPUBs for optimal viewing at 768X1024 (the resolution of my target ebook reader), although I try to make them readable at other resolutions too. Text reflowing is not an issue, but inserting sidenotes and images requires much consideration of the viewing pixel resolution, especially on lower-res devices.
Not having any of said lower-resolution devices myself yet, I can only rely on readers’ feedback to inform me of how they look at lower resolutions. This project is a personal exploration of typesetting in ebooks and elsewhere, and I would love to see what settings work best for various readers.

Note on PDFs: The nature and intention of PDF files as software- and hardware-independent display formats makes them unsuitable for optimal viewing on all devices of all sizes simultaneously, except in certain special cases. You can only typeset them for a particular size; they’ll look pretty terrible at other sizes. I will only typeset PDFs for larger, high-res display devices (specifically printing on paper at >600DPI), and do not care for opinions on their effectiveness on small, low-res displays.

* Compatibility Note: Some of the PDFs may not open in newer versions of Acrobat Reader (even though older versions handle them just fine). If you must use an Adobe product I’d suggest using Adobe Digital Editions instead. (more…)

Summer 2011: Shows I’m considering

Greetings, folks. As usual, it’s been quite a long while since I last had the time to update this blog.

As you can probably guess from the title, this post is a continuation of the one I did back in Fall, 2010. I’ve picked up a hefty lot of them this season, but chances are that I’ll end up dropping half or more of them.

Hello there guys,

Long time since the last post eh? I’ve been busy with work and uni mostly, but I still manage to squeeze in my guilty pleasure, J-music into my schedule.

This particular single, I liked so much that I went ahead and ordered the disc. Along with that, I decided to translate and romanize the lyrics too. I particularly hate romanizing things myself, but this single is so awesome that it made it all worth it <3 (more…)

Happy Birthday Sakura!

Ah, April 1st. Despite being the dreaded ‘April Fool’s Day’, today is also the birthday of our favorite little green eyed monster named Sakura.

If you seriously do not know who she is, you should go kill yourself before you finish reading this sentence.

Going to spend the day reliving memories of my 13 year old self when I first watched CCS. Might even rewatch some of it since decent rips are now available. (;´Д`)ハァハァ/lァ/lァ/ヽァ/ヽァ ノ \ア ノ \ア / \ ア / \ ア

Moving imagehosts…

Time to take out imageshit ヽ( `Д´ )ノ┌┛Σ(ノ・∀´(┗┐ヽ(・∀・ )ノ

Imageshack has recently started blocking based on ‘domains’. So to say, they now refuse to provide service to any domain that is not registered to them. Interestingly, this restriction can be lifted if the user himself opens an account with them.

This is the dumbest choice I’ve ever heard of in imagehosting history and is the reason I’ve moved from all 3rd party image hosts. The blog used to be under bandwidth constraints before, but that is not the case now. I’m free to host my own images now. Goodbye imageshit, you will not be missed.

P.s: If anybody comes across an image that’s still hosted on imagesh(ack|it), kindly drop me an email. The address can be found on the footer of the page. Thank you.
